SSL certificates

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) allows sensitive information between two parties, e.g. shop and client to be transmitted securely. One of the most important components is creating a trusted environment using https where potential customers feel confident. Browsers give visual cues, such as a lock icon or a green bar, to help visitors know when their connection is secured. Find out which SSL certificates is right for your environment, what features each certificate has and how to set up a SSL encryption.

Different kinds of SSL certificates

The right solution for each demand

Domain validation (DV) SSL certificate

The most widespread kind of SSL certificate verifies a domain in an email or file process. An authorization email gets sent out automatically to the email contacts listed in the whois record to confirm the SSL certificate order. Otherwise a file delivered by mails has to be uploaded to the own webpage. The certification agency is only checking if the buyer is the proper domain owner. The certificate is issued within minutes after the order.

Clicking the lock icon in the browser shows the domain name.

Organization validation (OV) SSL certificate

In addition to the domain check the identity is verified. The organization has to show relevant documents to proof the domain ownership. The validation process depends to varying degrees on the certificate provider. Usually this include confirming active registration in corporate registries and phone calls to the contact listed in a domain's whois record as well as comparing bank details.

In addition to the domain name, this certificate displays the certificate owner, the organization and the location.

Extended validation (EV) SSL certificate

The highest level of authentication is used to secure and to provide the green-bar assurance. As part of the EV verification process, applicants are put through a rigorous vetting, which includes careful documentation checks to validate the applicant's authenticity and their domain ownership. Further, it is verified that the individual requesting a certificate does, in fact, have authority to request a certificate for the domain in question. EV certificates feature 256-bit encryption to secure your data. Besides the green-bar, the organization, entity and location are displayed.
